SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Mustangs were in full control on Sunday as their steady offense and shutdown pitching corps combined for a 6-3 series finale victory against No. 25 UC Santa Barbara.
Ryan Stafford singled through the shortstop gap in Cal Poly's half of the first inning, quickly advancing to third with Ryan Fenn's first-pitch single through the same spot.
Joe Yorke beat out a throw to first on a fielder's choice. That grounder sent Stafford in for the 1-0 Cal Poly lead while also giving Yorke his 150th career RBI, inching closer to Steve Wood's program record.
Following Cal Poly's first inning lead, the Gauchos responded in the second by evening up the score 1-1 on Jessada Brown's two-out home run.
Turning to the bottom, Dylan Kordic and Evan Cloyd walked, allowing Aaron Casillas to advance them on a bunt. Cam Hoiland's sacrifice fly and Jake Steels' RBI-single brought the Mustang lead to 3-1.
Continuing the second inning flood of runs, Ryan Stafford placed a line drive in right-center, rounding the speedy Steels home. Stafford took advantage of a throwing error on the toss to home plate, advancing to third.
At that point, Cal Poly had forced UCSB's starter out after just 1 ? innings. Ryan Fenn closed out the inning's scoring after doubling to center field, scoring Stafford and extending the lead to 5-1.
Still pitching into the fifth, Griffin Naess matched his single-game high for strikeouts (6). However, UCSB cut the deficit to three runs shortly after.
Heading into the seventh, the Gauchos got runners on first and second, which brought out Josh Volmerding for Cal Poly, who threw back-to-back strikeouts and slammed the door on UCSB.
Stafford led off the bottom of the seventh with his first triple of 2024. Yorke picked up his second RBI of the afternoon and 151st of his career, hitting a sac fly to bring Stafford across home plate for the 6-2 lead.
The Gauchos tacked on one final run in the eighth, but Volmerding's 6 total K's through 2 ? innings earned him the save to seal Cal Poly's series victory.
After a 15-game home stretch, the Mustangs now head back on the road for their first road series of the conference slate at Cal State Fullerton. The first pitch of the series is set for Thursday, March 28 at 6:00 pm.
