The morning session of the NCAA Championships on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will also be carried live on ESPNU, while the evening sessions on each day will be telecast live on ESPN.
At 9 a.m. PDT Thursday, the national tournament gets underway with first round bouts. Then at 4 p.m. PDT on that day, second round and consolation matches will take place. On Friday at 9 a.m. PDT, quarterfinals and consolation second and third round bouts are scheduled to get started, then a brief break will be taken before semifinal and more consolation matches start at 5 p.m. PDT. On the final day Saturday, placing matches get underway at 8 a.m. PDT and championship bouts will begin live on ESPN at 4 p.m. PDT. Any wrestlers that make it to the final day Saturday guarantee themselves a placing position and All-American honors.
Graduate student Adam Kemp (174 pounds), redshirt junior Legend Lamer (157 pounds), redshirt sophomores Chance Lamer (149 pounds) and Trevor Tinker (285 pounds), and redshirt freshman Zeth Romney (133 pounds) will all compete for the Mustangs. Kemp, Legend, Chance and Romney all earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships based on their finishes at the Pac-12 Championships on March 10, while Tinker received an at-large berth when the full tournament field was announced last week.
Kemp is Cal Poly's highest-seeded wrestler entering NCAAs, checking in at No. 8 at 174 pounds. The 174-pound Pac-12 champion (16-3 this year) will take on No. 25 Brayden Thompson (12-9) from Oklahoma State in his first round bout. Kemp will carry a four-match winning streak into his match Thursday and is 4-2 against opponents that qualified for NCAAs in his weight class. This is Kemp's second appearance at NCAAs and first since 2022, when he posted a 1-2 mark as the No. 16 seed at 174.
Chance is making his second straight appearance at NCAAs and is seeded 10th at 149 pounds. He will square off against No. 23 seed Drew Roberts (19-8) from Minnesota in his opening match. Chance boasts a 17-4 record and fell to Arizona State's Kyle Parco, seeded second in the NCAA Championships, by a 5-1 decision in the Pac-12 championship match to place runner-up at conference. Last year while wrestling as a redshirt freshman at Michigan, Chance recorded a 3-2 mark at NCAAs as the No. 22 seed at 149 pounds, advancing to the Round of 12 where he fell to Iowa's Max Murin, who placed sixth.
At 133, Romney enters as an 11th seed in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. He is set to face No. 22 Domenic Zaccone (24-8) from Campbell in his first round bout. The Simi Valley, Calif native captured third at the Pac-12 Championships to secure an automatic bid to NCAAs and is 19-7 this season. Romney has had an incredible redshirt freshman campaign, securing a third place finish at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in late December — the second-highest individual finish ever by a Cal Poly wrestler at the tournament — and becoming the program's first multiple time Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week award winner. Romney has defeated eight ranked opponents this season and is 5-6 against wrestlers in this year's NCAA field.
Legend will be making his third appearance at NCAAs when he steps on the mat Thursday. He qualified for the tournament in back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022 at 149 pounds, going to 2-2 as the No. 9 seed in 2021 and 0-2 as the No. 15 in 2022. Legend punched his ticket to NCAAs by scoring an upset victory over Little Rock's Matty Bianchi, ranked No. 26 in the country at the time, in the third-place match at the Pac-12 Championships, avenging an overtime loss to Bianchi during their regular season dual meeting. At 157 pounds, Legend (14-8), the No. 29 seed, will face NC State's Ed Scott in his opening bout, who is seeded fourth with a 21-5 record this season. Scott is a two-time ACC Champion and captured fifth at the 2023 NCAA Championships to earn All-American honors.
This week's tournament will serve as a homecoming of sorts for Tinker, who was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, before moving to California in 2018. Most of Tinker's family still lives in Missouri, so he should hear plenty of cheers when the No. 28 seed (13-5) steps on the mat to battle No. 5 seed Nathan Taylor (23-3) from Lehigh on Thursday in an opening round bout at heavyweight. This is the second straight year Tinker has earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships, posting a 0-2 mark in his first appearance in 2023.
This is the third consecutive year Cal Poly has sent five wrestlers to NCAAs — just the second time in program history the Mustangs have accomplished that feat and the first since qualifying at least five from 2003 to 2007.
As a team, Cal Poly will be looking to improve upon its 27th-place finish (17.5 points) at last year's NCAA Championships. Currently, the Mustangs are ranked No. 21 in The Open Mat tournament rankings.
