NCAA BRACKETS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by graduate student Adam Kemp earning the No. 8 seed in his weight class, the five Cal Poly wrestlers headed to the NCAA Championships found out who they will be facing in their opening round matches at the tournament during a selection show on NCAA.com Wednesday night.
The full 33-man brackets for all 10 weight classes at the NCAA Championships were released and Kemp stole the spotlight for the Mustangs. The 174-pound Pac-12 champion received the No. 8 seed and will face 25th seeded Brayden Thompson (12-9) from Oklahoma State in his first match at the NCAA Championships, which take place next Thursday through Saturday at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. Kemp owns a 16-3 record this season and will carry a four-match winning streak into Kansas City. This will be Kemp's second appearance at nationals.
Redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer grabbed the No. 10 seeded at 149 pounds after placing second at the Pac-12 Championships this past weekend. Chance boasts a 17-4 record and will square off against No. 23 seed Drew Roberts (19-8) from Minnesota to open the tournament. Last year while wrestling as a redshirt freshman at Michigan, Chance advanced to the NCAA Round of 12 at 149 pounds, posting a 3-2 record.
At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Zeth Romney is seeded 11th and is set to face No. 22 Domenic Zaccone (24-8) from Campbell in his opening bout. In his first appearance at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday, Romney placed third in his weight class to earn an automatic bid to NCAAs. Romney is 19-7 this season and captured third at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in late December — the second-highest individual finish ever by a Cal Poly wrestler at the tournament.
Redshirt junior Legend Lamer (19-8) received the No. 29 seed at 157 pounds, while redshirt sophomore Trevor Tinker grabbed the No. 28 seed at 285 pounds. Lamer placed third at Pac-12s to secure his third career trip to NCAAs while Tinker received an at-large bid to the event on Tuesday. This is the second straight year Tinker has earned an NCAA at-large bid.
Opening round matches at the NCAA Championships get underway at 9 a.m. PDT next Thursday, March 21, at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
