CORVALLIS, Ore. — Highlighted by graduate student Adam Kemp capturing the 174-pound title, four Mustangs punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships on Sunday at the 2024 Pac-12 Wrestling Championships.
As a team, Cal Poly placed fifth overall with 96.5 points.
Seeded No. 1 entering the championships, Kemp delivered and didn't waver in pursuit of his first Pac-12 title. He defeated Arizona State's Cael Valencia by a 4-3 decision in the semifinals and edged out Little Rock's Tyler Brennan, ranked No. 19 in the country, by a 3-2 decision in the championship match. The ninth-ranked 174-pounder in the country is the third Mustang in program history to win a Pac-12 title at 174. He is 16-3 this season.
Redshirt sophomore Chance Lamer, who transferred to Cal Poly from Michigan this past summer, also made it to the championship match in his weight class. As the No. 3 seed at 149 pounds, Chance rolled to a commanding 29-12 technical fall victory in his first-round match before securing a 11-3 major decision over No. 2 Jaden Abas from Stanford, who he lost to in their regular season matchup. Then in the first-place match, Chance was unable to prevent Arizona State's Kyle Parco from capturing his third consecutive Pac-12 title, falling by a 5-1 decision. The second place finish at 149 pounds allowed the 10th-ranked wrestler to secure a trip to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year with a 17-4 record.
Redshirt junior Legend Lamer (157 pounds) and redshirt freshman Zeth Romney (133 pounds) each placed third in their respective weight classes at the Pac-12 Championships to secure automatic berths to nationals. Legend, ranked No. 27 in the nation, upset No. 26 Matty Bianchi from Little Rock by a 5-3 decision in the third-place bout to earn his third career trip to the NCAA Championships. In his first appearance at the conference championships, Romney beat Oregon State's Gabe Whisenhunt by a 4-2 decision to grab his first NCAA bid. The 11th-ranked 133-pounder is 19-7 this year.
Redshirt freshman Dom Mendez (125 pounds) and redshirt sophomores Jarad Priest (197 pounds) and Trevor Tinker (heavyweight) all had chances to snag automatic berths to NCAAs, but fell just short in their third-place matches. All three placed fourth in their weight class and will wait to see if they'll earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships when the full field is announced on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Abe Hinrichsen (141) and Kendall La Rosa (184) each took fifth, and Michael Goldfeder was sixth at 165.
The NCAA Championships will take place March 21-23 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
