SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a fierce three-game series in Austin, Texas against the No. 16 Longhorns, the Mustangs return home for a 15-game, 24-day home stint that will lead into the start of the Big West conference slate. The Utah Utes (7-1), Cal Poly's third power-five conference opponent in as many weeks, travel to Baggett Stadium for a weekend series.
Barring any inclement weather, the games are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday. Stay tuned to GoPoly.com and follow us on social media for the latest updates on games. All the games will only be broadcast locally on ESPN Radio 1280 due to schedule conflicts other home events.
In game one against Texas, redshirt sophomore ace Jakob Wright led Cal Poly into a pitcher's duel and overall defensive battle as Cal Poly fell in an incredibly tight contest against the country's 16th-ranked team and winningest program of all-time, the Texas Longhorns.
With just 8 hits combined between the two teams and only 3 through the first 5 innings, the Mustangs held true to their recent defensive prowess but still fell to one of the best offenses in college baseball, 2-0.
In what originally looked to be another pitcher's duel, Texas was able to gain the upper hand with Cal Poly's offensive struggles continuing through the second game of the series.
Though the game was kept close through the first six innings, the Longhorns strung together a second late offensive push to seal a 6-0 victory despite the Mustangs having 12 runners left on base and multiple innings of RISP.
Cal Poly senior center fielder Jake Steels notched three hits to extend his hitting streak to five games, but the Mustangs (2-5) fell to No. 16 Texas Sunday in the series finale, 7-0.
Leading up this weekend against Utah, the Mustangs lead the all-time series 11-4, but the two opponents have only played four series since Cal Poly joined the NCAA Division I in 1995. This will be the second straight year that the Utes and Mustangs face off, including last season's 2-1 series win.
Utah (7-1) is off to a hot start, losing its opening day game to Pepperdine 1-0 before sparking a 7-game win streak coming into San Luis Obispo, which included extra innings victories over the Big West's UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield.
Utah has been on a California tour since starting the season. Its homecoming will not even arrive until Mar. 12 against BYU. Even so, the Mustangs will look to utilize the home advantage of Baggett Stadium, particularly with the possibility of damp and windy weather throughout the weekend series.
Despite some close games, the Utes have made a statement with their smooth offense. Their batting average ranks near the bottom of Division I baseball (209th, .242 avg), yet the Utes have scored at least 6 runs in five of their seven games. Where the offense shines is its small-ball style with Utah ranked 10th in stolen bases and 43rd in sac bunts.
Following this weekend against the Utes, the Mustangs will continue defending the homestead with a midweek game against Pepperdine on Mar. 5 before hosting their fourth power-five opponent with the Big Ten's visiting Ohio State Buckeyes.
