Steels Extends Hit Streak but Mustangs Drop Series Finale Against No. 16 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — Cal Poly senior center fielder Jake Steels notched three hits to extend his hitting streak to five games, but the Mustangs (2-5) fell to No. 16 Texas Sunday in the series finale, 7-0.
Steels was 3-4 with three singles to lead Cal Poly hitting, which produced nine hits on the afternoon. Junior outfielder Casey Murray Jr., a junior college transfer, produced his first two hits as a Mustang going 2-3. Junior catcher Ryan Stafford recorded his second double of the season after leading the team last year with 20.
In his second start of the season on the mound, Ryan Baum went 3 2/3 innings giving up just one earned run and four hits while striking out four. The Mustangs used six relievers the rest of the way.
The Mustangs had plenty of scoring chances throughout the game. Steels and second baseman Ryan Fenn started off the game with back-to-back singles. However, on Fenn's single, Steels was thrown out from right field trying to get to third. Stafford then hit into an inning ending double play.
In the third, Cal Poly had runners at first and third with one out before Steels was caught stealing and a ground out ended the inning. Then in the sixth with Steels on first, Stafford doubled to left and Steels was cut down at home trying to score.
The No. 16 Longhorns (6-1) scored first in the third inning via a solo home run. They then tacked on one more via a solo shot in the sixth inning before getting three more in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Cal Poly will return home to Baggett Stadium next weekend for a three-game series against the PAC-12's University of Utah starting Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m. That will be the beginning of a stretch of 15 straight home games in March.
