Mustangs Fall at No. 16 Texas Saturday
2/24/2024 4:00:00 PM | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – In what originally looked to be another pitcher's duel, Texas was able to gain the upper hand with Cal Poly's offensive struggles continuing through the second game of the series. Though the game was kept close through the first six innings, the Longhorns strung together a second late offensive push to seal a 6-0 victory despite the Mustangs having 12 runners left on base and multiple innings of RISP.
Similarly to how the first game began for the Cal Poly defense, starter Steven Brooks rounded out innings one and two in just seven batters and no hits. The Mustangs looked to have the upper hand through the second inning as Evan Cloyd reached on a fielder's choice before moving to second on a fielding error that put Tate Shimao on first. Two straight fly outs ended that scoring opportunity, but Ryan Fenn got the Mustangs right back to business with a double through the left-center gap in the very next inning before he was also stranded.
A string of Longhorns hits in the third inning brought their first run across home plate when Jared Thomas and Peyton Powell combined for a pair of singles. In response, Aaron Casillas singled through the far left side to put Evan Cloyd in scoring position again. Liam MacDonald battled to a 3-2 count but was unable to bring Cloyd around.
Texas lengthened the deficit with a center field homer from Max Belyeu, making the score 3-0. For the third straight inning, the Mustangs found a way to get back in scoring position with runners on the corners in the top of the fifth. That would be Cal Poly's last best chance in the game as the Mustangs went the final four innings with just one hit.
After another two-run homer from Jared Thomas and an unearned run late in the eighth, the Longhorns put the game out of reach.
In his second start of 2024 after returning from injury, Ryan Fenn led the Mustangs with a 2-for-5 day. Brooks came close to posting a quality start after allowing just three earned runs and striking out five in 5.1 innings on the mound.
Cal Poly and Texas finish this three-game series tomorrow at 11:00am before heading back home for almost the entire month of March.
