Second-Half Rally Comes Up Short for Cal Poly
12/7/2024 8:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Graduate Owen Koonce led four Cal Poly men's basketball players in double-digit scoring figures with 25 points and 10 rebounds Saturday evening, but the Mustangs – after nearly overturning a 24-point second-half deficit – fell inside Mott Athletics Center to CSUN, 102-91.
Freshman guard Guzman Vasilic finished with a career best 16 points for the Mustangs (5-6, 0-2), who trailed CSUN (7-3, 1-1), 64-40, with 16 minutes remaining before Koonce completed a three-point play to cut Cal Poly's gap to 84-81 with four minutes to play.
Matadors forward Keonte Jones, however, converted his own three-play play during the ensuing possession before forward Marcus Adams, Jr. followed with a three-pointer to drive CSUN's lead up to nine points with two-and-a-half minutes left.
Freshman Peter Bandelj matched a career best with 15 points while fellow guard Mac Riniker added 14 and a team leading six assists for Cal Poly, which shot 55.6 (20-for-36) percent during the second half and scored 57 second-half points.
Cal Poly resumes action and returns to non-conference play when visiting San Jose State on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
During Saturday's matchup, two Jones free throws allowed the Matadors to claim the last of six early lead changes. Koonce's third three-pointer of the opening half helped Cal Poly cut its deficit to 23-19 with 10-and-a-half minutes remaining before the break, but CSUN answered with a 9-0 run to take its first double-digit lead of the night.
Shooting 52.5 (21-for-40) percent during the first period and keeping Cal Poly to just six made three-pointers in 27 first-half attempts, CSUN led at the break, 51-34.
Into the second half, Cal Poly still trailed, 75-60, with 11 minutes remaining before Bandelj knocked down three free throws and a three-pointer on successive possessions to cut the gap to single digits.
A Koonce layup with four-and-a-half to go shorted CSUN's lead to 84-78 before his three-point play brought the Mustangs to within one possession at 84-81.
