Mustangs Outdistanced in Thursday Big West Opener at UC Davis

DAVIS – Graduate guard Owen Koonce led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with a game high 19 points during Thursday's Big West opener at UC Davis, but the Mustangs – after leading the Aggies by double digits during the first half – fell inside the University Credit Union Center, 77-66.
Sophomore guard Kieran Elliott finished with eight points for Cal Poly (5-5, 0-1), which led UC Davis (4-4, 1-0) by one at the break before the Aggies shot 60.6 (20-for-33) percent during the second half to pull away.
Graduate guard Mac Riniker added seven points to go with a game high seven rebounds for the Mustangs. Freshman guard Cayden Ward also finished with seven points in his collegiate debut.
Cal Poly continues action when hosting CSUN for its Big West home opener on Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip time from Mott Athletics Center is 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Mustangs knocked down their initial three three-point attempts Thursday and, in holding UC Davis to a 13.3 (2-for-15) percent shooting start, opened an 18-8 lead after eight minutes.
Cal Poly led by as much as 11 points in the first half before the Aggies closed the period with a 19-9 run to cut the Mustang advantage to 31-30 at the break.
UC Davis continued its sprint into the second half as the Aggies scored 29 points inside the opening nine minutes to stretch a newfound lead to 60-42 while maintaining the double-digit advantage the remainder of the game.
