SAN LUIS OBISPO – Bringing height, length and depth to Mott Athletics Center ahead of the 2025-26 season, the Cal Poly men’s basketball program – for first-year head coach Mike DeGeorge’s initial recruiting class – recently added three players.
Set to join the Mustangs next summer are 6-4 guard Jason Scott (Houston, Texas/Westbury Christian School) and 6-6 forwards Braden Freeman (Moline, Ill./Moline HS) and Troy Plumtree (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College).
Jason Scott (Guard)
As a junior at Westbury Christian School during the 2023-24 season, Scott was named TAPPS District Most Valuable Player after averaged 22.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Entering his senior season, Scott is already a two-time TAPPS All-Texas team and TAPPS all-district team honoree.
Scott intends to major in economics with a minor in law and society.
“Jason is a versatile lead guard that can defend multiple positions, play out of ball screens and make shots,” DeGeorge said. “His most valuable attribute though is his competitive spirit.”

Troy Plumtree (Forward)
Featuring a 6-10 wingspan, Plumtree directed Wellington College to the most recent New Zealand high school national championship after averaging 33 points, 19 rebounds and six assists per game.
A member of the New Zealand U-17 National Team, Plumtree helped his country to a fourth-place finish at the 2024 FIBA U-17 World Cup in Turkey where he averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game and finished with 12 points in a semifinal loss to the United States.
From a sporting family, Plumtree’s father, John, competed for elite rugby clubs in his native New Zealand and South Africa before embarking on a coaching career that has included stints with the New Zealand, Ireland and Japan National Teams and top-tier clubs in Wales, New Zealand and South Africa. Elder brother, Taine, has earned a half-dozen caps for the Wales National Team and currently plays for Welsh club Scarlets in the United Rugby Championship.
“Troy is a long and versatile wing who can switch and rebound and plays extremely hard,” DeGeorge said. “He comes from a rugby family and has only played basketball for the past four years. He has a very high ceiling and we anticipate him really developing in our program.”

As a sophomore during the 2022-23 season, Freeman helped lead Moline HS to a 35-3 overall record, a Western Big 6 league title and No. 3 state divisional ranking.
“Braden is also a versatile athlete with size and athleticism,” DeGeorge said. “He can guard multiple positions and is a winner.”
