SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite some stellar performances from redshirt junior Trevor Tinker and redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman, Cal Poly wrestling dropped a pair of home duals to Cal Baptist and Northwestern on Thursday night at Mott Athletics Center.
With four of their seven nationally ranked wrestlers out of the lineup, the Mustangs put up quite the fight, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Lancers (5-2) and Wildcats (2-1). Cal Poly, who is currently receiving votes in the NWCA Coaches Poll and is ranked No. 20 in the InterMat tournament rankings, opened the dual doubleheader with a 22-16 defeat to Cal Baptist before capping the night with a 29-14 loss to Northwestern.
In the Mustangs’ first action inside the Mott Athletics Center since their season opening dual against No. 30 Indiana on Nov. 3, Holeman (125 pounds) and Tinker (285 pounds) put on quite the show for the Mustang faithful, securing some impressive victories. They were the only two Mustangs to go 2-0 on the night.
Tinker brought all his tools to the mat Thursday, wrestling nearly perfectly. He scored a whopping 36 points across his two matches, first defeating Cal Baptist’s Tristan Kemp by a 16-1 technical fall (5:11) and then taking down Northwestern’s Dirk Morley by a 20-4 technical fall (5:36) to end the night. The 30th-ranked heavyweight in the country recorded 10 takedowns across the two bouts and racked up well over eight and a half minutes of riding time. He improved to 12-5 on the year with the wins. Tinker’s victory over Morley was his second of the season over the Wildcat, after rolling to a 18-1 technical fall over him in his opening match at the Cliff Keen Invitational two weeks ago.
Holeman was at his best Thursday as well, taking it to his opponents at 125 pounds. He pinned Cal Baptist’s Mitchell Neiner 4:44 into their match to start things off before scoring an upset victory over No. 32 Dedrick Navarro from Northwestern, grabbing an 8-6 decision thanks to two first-period takedowns. Holeman, who was ranked No. 30 in this week’s 125-pound College Wrestling Report rankings, totaled six takedowns between the two bouts and improved to 9-5 on the year.
Graduate student Legend Lamer secured a commanding victory at 157 pounds in the dual with Cal Baptist, blanking his opponent en route to a 15-0 technical fall (4:42). He did not wrestle against Northwestern.
Redshirt freshman Blake Hinrichsen only wrestled in the Northwestern dual but he made the most of it, securing four takedowns in a 13-8 decision at 174 pounds over Northwestern’s Aiden Vandenbish to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Redshirt freshman Daschle Lamer earned the other victory of the night for the Mustangs at 184 pounds, defeating Northwestern’s Jon Halvorsen by a 3-0 decision with nearly two minutes of riding time.
Cal Poly won four of the 10 bouts against Northwestern and a total of three against Cal Baptist. The dual with the Lancers could have gone either way though as five of the 10 matches were separated by 3 points or less. Redshirt freshmen Caleb Park (133), Gavin Fernandez (157) and Tyler Hodges (197) and freshman Jagger French (149) all made their first career dual appearance.
The Mustangs cap the week by sending a handful of wrestlers to the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday. Then the Mustangs will finish off the 2024 calendar year with a trip to Illinois on Dec. 29-30 to compete in the 60th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern.
