
Fernandez Places 4th at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nev. — Redshirt freshman Gavin Fernandez captured fourth place at 149 pounds at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday to highlight action for the Cal Poly wrestling team.
Three days after making his first career dual appearance for the Mustangs against Northwestern, Fernandez had a strong showing on the mat, posting a 3-2 record en route to taking fourth in his weight class. The Danville, Calif. native won his first three matches by major decision, technical fall and decision before dropping his final two bouts.
Freshman Anthony Berg shined as well, recording the most victories of any Cal Poly wrestler at the tournament with a 5-1 mark at 157 pounds. The Rocklin, Calif native secured three victories by decision and two by major decision.
Redshirt freshman Devin Alexander posted a 3-2 record at 157 pounds. Redshirt junior Josh Harkey (197), redshirt sophomore Luke Meyer (285), redshirt freshman Tyler Hodges (197), and freshmen Ryan Clink (174) and Anthony Lucio (133) all went 2-2.
A total of 15 Mustangs competed in the tournament. As a team, Cal Poly placed 12th (35 points).
Cal Poly will now prepare for the 60th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern on Dec. 29-30 at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
