SAN LUIS OBISPO – After setting new Cal Poly men’s golf program records for lowest single-round score and lowest three-round total and turning in a pair of top-10 finishes to close the fall season, senior Baron Szeto was named Big West Golfer of the Month for a second successive month Wednesday afternoon.
Szeto opened California’s Oct. 7-8 Alister Mackenzie Invitational with an eight-under 63 at The Meadow Club (Fairfax, Calif.) to establish a new program record for 18 holes, eclipsing three previous Mustangs who had carded 64s.
He shot 67 during the second round and 65 in the third for an 18-under 195 and a second-place finish at the Mackenzie Invitational. Producing 24 birdies during the tournament, Szeto’s 195 bettered the previous program three-round record of 199, set by Chris Kirk at the April 2-3, 2007 Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
As a program at the Mackenzie Invitational, Cal Poly set a new program three-round record with a 32-under 820.
Szeto then closed the fall slate with a 10th-place showing at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate hosted by Cal Poly, finishing with a three-under 213 at The Preserve (Carmel-by-the-Sea) alongside teammate Jackson Parrish. Two of Szeto’s three rounds at The Preserve were under par, including a final-round, three-under 69.
As a program, Cal Poly resumes action at Eastern Kentucky’s Mesquite Desert Classic, scheduled for Feb. 16-18 at Casablanca Golf Club (Mesquite, Nev.).
