SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a commanding performance in Cal Poly’s season opener against No. 30 Indiana, Trevor Tinker has been named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
This is Tinker’s first time receiving the honor and he is just the fourth Mustang ever to earn the award, joining Evan Wick, Bernie Truax and teammate Zeth Romney — who secured the distinction twice last season.
Tinker put a show in front of the Mustang faithful on Sunday at the Mott Athletics Center, dismantling Indiana’s Jacob Bullock, the 16th-ranked 285-pounder in the country, by technical fall 17-1 just 3:40 into his first bout of the season. Tinker earned three takedowns and two 4-point near falls in the match to roll past Bullock and help Cal Poly finish the dual on a high note after the Mustangs fell 31-11 to the Hoosiers.
The St. Louis, Missouri native is currently ranked 17th in the nation at 285 pounds and has qualified for the NCAA Championships the last two years. With Sunday’s victory, Tinker improved to 18-9 in his career in duals and 39-27 overall.
Cal Poly wrestling heads to Kansas City this Saturday to compete in the Tiger Style Invite hosted by Missouri.
