SAN LUIS OBISPO – Overturning a three-stroke, final-round deficit to secure a playoff victory during Wake Forest’s Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club and capturing his second collegiate tournament title, Cal Poly senior Baron Szeto was named Big West Golfer of the Month for September on Wednesday afternoon.
Szeto, who earned his first career Big West weekly honor, entered the Sept. 20 final round at Royal Dublin trailing Maynooth (Ireland) University’s Ryan Griffin by three strokes. Szeto, however, shot a five-under 67 to close the gap before prevailing on the second playoff hole and securing his first title since sharing the 2023 Big West Championship.
Szeto opened the three-day tournament with a three-under 69 before going one-under on day No. 2. He finished with a nine-under 207 at Royal Dublin.
Earlier in September, Szeto began the season with a 50th-place showing at Toledo’s Sept. 9-10 Inverness Intercollegiate. At the par-69 Inverness Club, Szeto shot a 216 (75-69-72).
As a program, Cal Poly continues tournament action at California’s Oct. 7-8 Alister MacKenzie Invitational at The Meadow Club (Fairfax, Calif.).
