Mustangs Drop Home Contest Against UC San Diego
10/26/2024 7:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In a match characterized by errors and low hitting percentage on both sides of the court, the Mustangs (14-7, 7-3 BWC) were unable to find even footing and suffered a 3-1 loss (23-25, 25-16, 19-25, 21-25) to the Tritons.
Tommy Stockham (15 kills) and Amy Hiatt (13) led Cal Poly from the offense with Breklyn Pulling putting in some versatile work with 8 kills and 6 blocks, the third time this season she has put up at least five blocks. Stockham's 15 kills now puts her within just a handful from cracking Cal Poly's all-time top-3 career kills list.
Both Elif Hurriyet (13) and London Haberfield (11) tallied double-digit digs in helping hold the Tritons to just .183 hitting, while the Mustangs combined for 14 total blocks for their highest mark of the season.
Alongside Pulling, the Mustangs enjoyed at least two blocks from Kendall Beshear, Chloe Leluge, Amy Hiatt, Emme Bullis, and Stockham. Bullis also provided 38 set assists despite Cal Poly hitting at a .178 clip on the afternoon.
It was an error-prone start for both squads with five of the first ten combined points in the opening set coming via mistakes. However, Cal Poly was able to steal away some points off blocks while the offense was still finding a groove.
Within a short amount of time, the Mustangs surged ahead to 20-14, their largest lead of the set, before a UCSD timeout allowed the Tritons to regroup and pull back a 21-21 tie. From there, UCSD rode the momentum to a 25-23 set win on an 11-3 run from that definitive Cal Poly lead.
In response to the Tritons stealing set one in dramatic fashion, the Mustangs got off to a blistering start in the second frame thanks, in part, to a 6-0 run early in the set as Ella Scott's serve game was on. Cal Poly never relented and eased to a 25-16 win while hitting by far its highest percentage of the match (.387).
Like Cal Poly's spark in the second set, the Tritons enjoyed a quick lead of their own in the third set with a 4-1 lead. Pulling's multiple blocks greatly helped Cal Poly chip away at the UCSD lead until an eventual 10-10 tie. That still did not stop the Tritons from regrouping and coming straight back with a 15-11 lead at the media timeout.
After increasing their third set lead to 17-14, Cal Poly once again went on a run that brought the Green and Gold within just a couple points. Starting at 20-17, UCSD broke away once more to seal the set at 25-21.
From the start of the fourth set, both teams engaged in a back-and-forth battle that seemed to be one of the most even moments of the match, which culminated with a 13-8 Cal Poly lead before the Tritons needed a timeout. Pushing back with a long run, UCSD tied the match at 17-all and did not take long to overturn the lead for a 25-19 set and match win.
After another 1-1 week, the Mustangs still sit in second place for now, as they head on the road for another pair of matches against UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday and Hawai'i on Saturday.
