Mustangs Fall Saturday to UC Santa Barbara, 61-52

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior guard Kobe Sanders (above) led the Cal Poly men's basketball program with 22 points and five assists, but the Mustangs – after tying Saturday evening's matchup with rival UC Santa Barbara midway through the second half – fell down the stretch to the Gauchos inside Mott Athletics Center, 61-52.
Sanders also finished with a team leading five rebounds alongside senior Tuukka Jaakkola and fellow forward Paul Bizimina for Cal Poly (4-12, 0-4), which faced a 45-43 deficit with nine minutes remaining before being kept without a field goal for seven-and-a-half minutes. UC Santa Barbara (8-6, 1-3), meanwhile, shot 61.5 (8-for-13) percent from the floor during the second half and 75.0 (12-for-16) percent from the free throw line to pull away.
The Mustangs forced UC Santa Barbara into 17 turnovers while committing just eight.
Cal Poly resumes action at UC Riverside on Thursday, Jan. 11 with the Mustangs playing just their second Big West road game through the opening five matchups. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
After draining its opening three attempts from the floor Saturday, the Mustangs missed their next six and trailed after nine minutes, 17-10. Cal Poly, however, recovered with a 9-0 run for a brief 19-17 advantage with six minutes remaining in the half.
The two sides traded the lead three more times before UC Santa Barbara ultimately took a 32-24 advantage into the break.
Facing a 10-point deficit early in the second half, Cal Poly connected on six of its initial 11 attempts to draw level at 38-38 with 14 minutes to go.
