SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Over the last month, redshirt freshman Zeth Romney has been tearing it up on the mat and climbing the national rankings week by week, and on Tuesday he received some much deserved recognition.
After posting an undefeated record across three home duals, Romney has been named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week. The Simi Valley, Calif. native is the first Mustang in program history to earn the award more than once. He received the honor for the first time just two weeks ago on Jan. 3 after placing third at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships — the second-highest individual finish ever by a Mustang at the tournament.
This past week, the ninth-ranked 133 pounder in the country helped power Cal Poly to three dual victories at home. On Friday in a 39-3 dual win over American, Romney pinned Maxmilian Leete just 24 seconds into their bout — tied for the 11th quickest fall in Cal Poly dual meet history. Then later that night in a come from behind 23-15 dual win over Northern Colorado, Romney defeated No. 17-ranked Dominick Serrano by a 4-1 sudden victory, earning a takedown in the first overtime period. It was Romney's sixth victory over a ranked opponent this season.
On Sunday, Romney capped his perfect week on the mat with a dominant showing in a 23-17 victory over Air Force. At 6:47, Romney secured a 17-1 technical fall win over the Falcons' Bubba Wright.
Romney improved to 15-5 overall and 4-1 in duals this season with his performance this past week.
Cal Poly travels to No. 16 Oregon State (4-2) at 6 p.m. Friday to open its Pac-12 dual schedule.
