HIGHLIGHT VIDEO FOR WOO, HANIGER, THORPE AND LEE
Woo's 15th start in the Major Leagues for Seattle ended after notching eight strikeouts with no walks over 5 2/3 innings last Tuesday as the Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 8-0. Woo takes a 3-4 mark and 4.16 ERA into his next start Monday night at Oakland.
Woo was removed from his scheduled start three days earlier "to protect his workload," according to manager Scott Servais. Woo has recorded 76 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings.
Haniger, activated by the San Francisco Giants on August 29 after he was hit by a pitched ball and fractured his right forearm June 14 at St. Louis, has struggled at the plate since returning to the lineup, but doubled twice and drove in three runs Sunday at Colorado.
Haniger has hit for a .165 average since coming off the injury list and sports a .213 average for the season (56 games) with 13 doubles, six home runs and 28 RBIs.
Lee, who hit .292 in 87 games at Double-A Wichita before his promotion to Triple-A St. Paul, is hitting .239 for the Saints, including a grand slam, a solo home run, two triples and a four-hit game in the last two weeks. St. Paul has six games remaining this season against Toledo.
Thorpe earned his fourth win for Somerset on August 31 with nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings against Portland and was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Month for August, going 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA in four starts. He allowed just four earned runs on 12 hits over 26.1 innings, finished second in the league with 39 strikeouts and led the league in average against (.133) and WHIP (0.65).
Thorpe's 14 wins this year are the most by Minor League starters this season and he leads all Minor Leaguers with 177 strikeouts for the year. He was placed on the seven-day Injured List on Sept. 12 as a precaution after experiencing some minor discomfort in his non-throwing arm in his last start Sept. 6 against Erie, ending his 2023 season.
Meanwhile, Nick Torres powered Laguna into the final round of the Mexican League playoffs by going 10-for-25 (.400) in a six-game series against Monterrey, 6-for-23 in five games versus Tijuana and 6-for-27 in the semifinals against Dos Laredos. Laguna played Puebla in the best-of-seven final-round series, Puebla winning four games to two, with Torres going 8-for-22 (.364) with five RBIs, including a 3-for-3 performance with four RBIs in Game 2.
The outfielder finished the regular season 19th in the Mexican League in hitting, eighth in doubles, 22nd in home runs, 14th in hits and 11th in RBIs. He hit .338 in 83 regular-season games at Laguna.
Andrew Alvarez has struck out 20 over 26 innings in his five Double-A appearances on the mound at Harrisburg, but has an 0-3 record to show for his efforts. His ERA stands at 4.50. Alvarez was 7-4 with a 2.61 ERA at Wilmington prior to his call-up at Double-A Harrisburg.
Nick Meyer has played 71 games this season, all at Triple-A Syracuse, hitting .217, including a .245 mark in August.
In addition to Thorpe, former Mustangs who did not finish the regular season in uniform included Mark Mathias (placed on the 60-day injury list August 19 with a right shoulder strain), Spencer Howard (released by the New York Yankees on August 30), Taylor Dollard (underwent labrum surgery in late June), Jason Franks (placed on injury list August 8) and Alex McKenna (released by the Houston Astros on July 27).
Cal Poly had as many as six former players in the Major Leagues this year, a record for the program.
Haniger is with the Giants and Woo is pitching for Seattle. Mathias played 22 games for Pittsburgh and five for the Giants this season, Erich Uelmen pitched one inning for Philadelphia on May 19 against his former team, the Chicago Cubs, Howard pitched three games for the Texas Rangers and Justin Bruihl, who pitched 21 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies earlier this month, has pitched in seven Rockies games so far.
