Moness Earns Big West Freshman of the Week Honors

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After burying her first career goal in Sunday's 1-1 draw against No. 8 Santa Clara, midfielder Sophia Moness has been crowned the Big West Freshman of the Week.
In the 21st minute, Moness received a pass from sophomore Camryn Penn and blasted a shot from over 25 yards out to the top left corner of the Santa Clara net. It was the first collegiate goal and point for the El Dorado Hills, Calif. native.
The strike allowed Cal Poly to secure its first draw over a top-10 nationally ranked team since Sept. 24, 2015. The 2023 Oak Ridge High grad has played in all six matches for the Mustangs this season, earning a start in the last three. Across 313 minutes on the pitch, she has recorded six shots — tied for the third most on the team.
For her efforts, Moness was also named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Cal Poly women's soccer travels to Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Thursday to open Big West play before hosting Pacific at noon Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
