SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Larry Lee's contract as head baseball coach at Cal Poly has been extended through the 2027 season.
Lee, who will be entering his 22nd season as head coach at Cal Poly next spring, has guided the Mustangs to 11 seasons of 30 or more victories, 16 winning seasons over the last 20 full campaigns, including a Big West title in 2014 and 17 finishes of fourth place or higher in the conference -- three straight second-place finishes from 2017-19 -- and three NCAA regional playoff berths.
Aside from the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign, the Mustangs have averaged 32 victories per season under Lee's guidance. Cal Poly has earned 35 or more victories seven times. Over the last 12 full seasons (2011-19, 2021-23), Lee has guided the Mustangs to wins in 69 of 111 Big West series, a 62.2 winning percentage. The Mustangs won nine of 10 conference series in 2022.
In 21 seasons with the Mustangs, Lee has produced 54 first-team All-Big West players, 13 All-Americans and 10 freshman All-Americans. A total of 81 Cal Poly players coached by Lee have signed professional baseball contracts, including 79 in the last 19 years. During Lee's tenure, 36 Mustangs have been drafted in the top 10 rounds, compared to just eight prior to Lee's arrival in 2003. Of the 22 former Mustangs who have played in the Major Leagues, 13 were coached by Lee.
Lee has moved to the top of the Big West among head coaches in conference and overall wins. Lee is now 283-213 in 20 Big West seasons (no conference games were played in 2020) and, at USC on Feb. 26, 2021, Lee surpassed Bob Bennett of Fresno State for the overall Big West record with his 548th career victory. Lee is now 635-512-2 overall.
