IRVINE, Calif. — Cal Poly's Drew Huston is headed to the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The soon-to-be sophomore on the Mustang swimming and diving team secured his ticket to the Olympic Trials on Thursday night during the 2023 Speedo Junior National Championships at William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine.
In the finals of the men's 100-meter backstroke, Huston swam a lifetime best of 55.48 seconds to place second overall. The time surpassed the U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 55.69, earning him a spot at the 2024 meet which will be held on June 15-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Huston, representing King Aquatic Club, nearly met the qualifying standard during prelims Thursday morning, posting a time of 55.71 — third fastest among the 141 swimmers at Junior Nationals. The Fox Island, Wash. native shaved over a full second off his entry time in the 100 back.
Huston also competed in the men's 200 back at Junior Nationals on Wednesday, advancing to the B-final by swimming an over 4.5-second personal best during prelims (2:03.28). He ended up placing 15th overall in the event.
Huston qualified for Junior Nationals in the 100 and 200 back by swimming personal bests in both events at the Speedo Grand Challenge in May.
This past season for the Mustangs, Huston captured fifth in the 100-yard back at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships as a true freshman, swimming the third-fastest time in school history (48.30) to grab All-MPSF Second Team honors.
