PARIS, France — Eyeing a spot on the 2024 U.S. Olympic team, Taylor Spivey, a 2014 Cal Poly grad, was the second American to cross the finish line at the World Triathlon Olympic Games Test Event in Paris on Thursday.
Spivey, a member of the Cal Poly swimming and diving program from 2009-14, placed 10th overall in the elite women division with a time of 1:52.46. She finished just over a minute behind the winner, Great Britain's Beth Potter (1:51.40), and completed the triathlon just 42 seconds after the first U.S. finisher — Taylor Knibb, a 2020 Olympian and 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Champion.
The Test Event was the first opportunity for Spivey and the rest of the U.S. Olympic hopefuls to punch their tickets to the 2024 Paris Games in the triathlon, however, every race over the coming weeks and months matters when determining who will receive a spot on the team. Points accumulated during the World Triathlon Championship Series and world rankings will both be factored in when the USA Triathlon selection committee makes its decision. Currently, Spivey is fourth overall (2,836.90 points) in this year's WTCS Standings and the top American. She is also second in the world rankings and third in the World Triathlon Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking.
Spivey, a Redondo Beach, Calif. native, has been a member of the USA Triathlon National Team since 2016 and narrowly missed out on a berth to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She finished third overall in the WTCS rankings in 2021 and fourth in both 2019 and 2022. In 2014, Spivey earned a USA Triathlon Collegiate National title.
Spivey graduated cum laude from Cal Poly in 2014 with a bachelor's in architecture.
The final race of the 2023 WTCS is set for Sept. 22 in Pontevedra, Spain.
