PARKER, Colo. – Cal Poly men's golf senior Joey Zambri and junior Jackson Parrish both faced challenging first rounds Monday at 123rd United States Amateur Championship as the Mustang duo both carded 82s at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Parrish, who reached the U.S. Amateur after winning medalist honors during his July sectional qualifying tournament at Boulder Creek Golf Club (Boulder Creek, Nev.), recorded an eagle on the par-four, 328-yard second hole and birdied the par-five, 547-yard fifth hole. Parrish, however, finished his round with five bogeys and two triple bogeys.
Zambri (above), runner-up during his sectional qualifier at Crystalaire Country Club (Llano, Calif.), enjoyed a pair birdies Monday, but completed his day with three double bogeys.
Following Tuesday's second round, the U.S. Amateur Field will be cut from 312 players to 64 for five successive days of elimination match play. The amateur winner will be determined on Sunday, Aug. 20 following a 36-hole championship match. U.S. Amateur action is being broadcasted on Peacock, the Golf Channel and NBC.
Cal Poly previously had multiple U.S. Amateur qualifiers in 2018 with Thomas Lehman and current graduate student Austin Liu competing at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
