SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Traci Granger, a 1980 Cal Poly grad, is returning home from the World Aquatics Masters Championships in Kyushu, Japan with four world titles and one world record.
The Cal Poly swimming and diving assistant coach wrapped up an incredible showing at the 19th World Masters Championships earlier this week.
Granger, widely regarded as one of the fastest swimmers in the world in her age group, dominated the 65-69 age group at worlds, winning titles in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly and 100 fly over the last few days. Her time of 32.36 seconds in the 50 fly shattered the world record and she finished over two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the event.
Granger, representing the Tamalpais Aquatic Masters, cruised to victory in her other three championship swims as well, winning the 100 fly by 12 seconds, the 100 free by over four seconds and the 50 free by over two seconds.
Granger, who joined the Cal Poly coaching staff as an assistant in December, is no stranger to success in the pool. This April, Granger captured eight national titles in the 65-69 age group at the 2023 U.S. Masters National Championships in Irvine, winning five individual events and swimming legs on three first-place relay teams. She also established a new American record in the 50-yard butterfly (28.79) at the meet.
During her decorated Masters swimming career, Granger has won countless titles, broken dozens of American records and shattered a handful of world and Pan-American records.
Granger, who served as head coach for the Mustangs during the 1984-85 season, competed at Cal Poly from 1978-80, helping the team capture AIAW Division II national titles in the women's 200 medley and 400 medley relays in 1980. The Tulare, Calif. native also broke multiple school records during her Cal Poly career.
