SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A pair of Cal Poly track and field athletes will descend upon "TrackTown USA" this Thursday through Sunday to take part in the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Aidan McCarthy, Cal Poly's first athlete in 12 years to secure First Team All-American honors, is to compete in the USATF (Senior) Championships, while Rory Devaney, who shattered the school record in the men's hammer throw as a true freshman this spring, will take the stage in the USATF U20 (Junior) Championships. Most of the meet can be watched live on USATF.TV with a RunnerSpace +PLUS account, with select viewing windows available on CNBC and Peacock on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.
McCarthy is one of 32 runners entered in the men's 800-meter. McCarthy enters the meet with the 13th-fastest time (1:46.26) and ranked 15th in the U.S. in the event, with only four current collegiate runners ranked ahead of him. Georgia's Will Sumner owns the top 800 time ran by an American this season, winning the NCAA title with a mark of 1:44.26.
The first round of the men's 800 is set for 2:52 p.m. Thursday, with the top three finishers in each of the four heats and the next four-fastest times advancing to the semifinals at 6:10 p.m. Friday. The top three finishers in each of the two heats and the next two fastest times will qualify for the 800 final at 6:27 p.m. Sunday, which will be aired live on CNBC.
For the most part, the top three finishers in each event at the USATF (Senior) Championships, depending upon world rankings and qualifying standards, will secure a trip to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on August 19-27.
McCarthy finished off an incredible redshirt sophomore season with the Mustangs on June 9 in Austin, Texas, placing seventh in the 800 at the NCAA Finals to earn First Team All-American praise. The Pleasanton, Calif. native became Cal Poly's first and only First Team All-American in the men's 800 in Division I program history with his performance and allowed the Mustang men to score team points at the NCAA Championships for the 12th time and for the first time since 2007.
The two-time Big West champion obliterated the school record in the 800 and 1,500 this outdoor season and became the first Mustang to run a sub four-minute mile during the indoor season. He also ran away with the NCAA West Preliminaries title in the 800, becoming the first athlete in program history to finish first in an event at the meet.
Devaney, a San Luis Obispo native, is entered in a pair of events at the U20 Championships — the men's hammer and discus. The U20 men's hammer will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday with the discus set for 3 p.m. Saturday. Live coverage of both events will be available on USATF.TV.
Devaney made plenty of noise in his first season as a Mustang, breaking Tom Pagani's 62-year-old school record with a toss of 202 feet, 4 inches at the West Coast Relays and capturing third in the event at the conference championships to secure All-Big West honors. In the discus, the 2022 San Luis Obispo High grad is No. 5 all-time in school history (176-8) and took fifth in the event at this year's Big West Championships.
Devaney is the first Mustang since Nick Betchart (men's shot put) and Bobby Poynter (men's 800) in 2019 to qualify for the USATF U20 Championships.
Entering the meet, Devaney is seeded seventh in the hammer and ninth in the discus. The top two finishers in each event will earn a chance to represent Team USA at the 2023 Pan American U20 Championships in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, on August 4-6.
