
True, Warrecker Selected During Day Three of MLB Draft

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly baseball saw two of its pitchers hear their names called Tuesday during day three of the 2023 Major League Draft as Derek True was selected by the Houston Astros in the 18th round and Bryce Warrecker by the New York Yankees in the 20th round.
True, who was drafted last year in the 20th round by the Oakland Athletics but elected to return to play for the Mustangs in 2023, made 17 relief appearances with a 3.90 ERA and 1-3 record over 32 1/3 innings this past season. He struck out 38 batters with a 2.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
In 2022, True was 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA over 19 relief appearances in 20 2/3 innings, striking out 23 batters. He finished that season not allowing a run in his final six stints on the mound.
True was 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA as a freshman and 2-1 with a 6.43 ERA as a sophomore. For his career, he was 4-7 with a 5.17 ERA and collected 92 strikeouts.
As a senior at Santa Barbara High School, True was 9-0 with a 2.20 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 57 1/3 innings, allowing just 18 walks, but was not drafted in 2019.
Warrecker, a junior, was 3-7 with a 4.89 ERA over 16 appearances and 14 starts in 2023. He led the Mustangs with 77 strikeouts and 81 innings pitched.
As a sophomore in 2022, Warrecker was 2-0 with a 5.81 ERA in 13 relief appearances.
Last summer, Warrecker opened eyes playing the in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Orleans Firebirds. There, he was 4-1 with a 2.07 ERA in 10 appearances and was named the Cape Cod League's Most Outstanding Pitcher. He ended his summer ranked as the seventh-highest pro prospect from the Cape Cod League by Baseball America.
As a freshman at Cal Poly in 2021, Warrecker was 3-3 with a 5.45 ERA, notching 30 strikeouts over 33 innings.
Also a Santa Barbara High School product, Warrecker was 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA as a junior before having his senior season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was not drafted out of high school.
Cal Poly has now had 168 players selected in the MLB Draft, including 10 who were drafted twice. A total of 22 former Mustangs have reached the big leagues, the last 13 under Larry Lee, who just finished his 21st season as head coach.
