CAL POLY RESULTS
IRVINE, Calif. — Competing alongside some of the best swimmers in the world, over 20 Cal Poly swimmers descended upon the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine this weekend to compete in the 2023 Speedo Grand Challenge.
Freshman Drew Huston (pictured above) shined, swimming a lifetime best of 2:07.89 in the men's 200-meter backstroke to win his C-Final heat, place 13th overall and qualify for Junior Nationals in the event this summer. Huston also advanced to the A-Final in the 100-meter backstroke, capturing fourth with a personal best of 57.70 seconds.
In February, Huston secured fifth in the men's 100-yard backstroke at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, swimming the third-fastest time in school history (48.30) to cap an incredible first season with the Mustangs. The performance earned Huston All-MPSF Second Team honors.
Freshman Alex Seybold also qualified for the finals in the men's 200 back Saturday, placing 20th overall.
Freshman Lucas Meneghetti and Finn Schlamp, an 18-year-old from Munich, Germany who will join the Mustangs for the 2023-24 season, advanced to the finals in the men's 100 back. Meneghetti took 14th in the C-Final and Schlamp was 10th in the B-Final.
On the women's side, 10 Cal Poly swimmers competed with junior Kelly McDermott and freshman Courtney Cross leading the way. This season, McDermott captured eighth in the 400-yard individual medley at the MPSF Championships, and swam the fourth-fastest time in school history (2:01.34) at the meet.
"Overall, the team competed really well and made a number of personal bests both in time and technique," Cal Poly swimming and diving head coach Phil Yoshida said. "It was a great way to kick off their summer seasons and exciting to see the potential for next year."
