LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Cal Poly surged toward the top spot on the leaderboard with an eight-under-par total on the front nine, but as the afternoon winds picked up, the Mustangs fell back into fourth place by the end of the day in the 2023 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship at the La Quinta Country Club.
Coach Phil Rowe's Mustangs posted 11 birdies, one eagle and five bogeys during its first nine holes of play on the 7,056-yard, par-72 course, moving under par in the team standings and close to first-place Long Beach State.
But on the back nine, Cal Poly went 11 over par with three birdies, eight bogeys and a trio of double-bogeys, finishing just before the second round was suspended due to excessive winds.
Fifteen golfers were still on the course when play was halted. They will return to the course Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. to complete the second round. Round three's split tees sendoff begins at 8 a.m. for groups teeing off on the first hole (including Cal Poly) and 8:30 a.m. for three teams at No. 10.
The Mustangs posted their second straight four-person 290 total Monday and enter Tuesday's final round nine shots behind Long Beach State with a four-over-par 580 aggregate.
At the start of the second round, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and CSUN all were tied for first place at seven under par. By the end, Long Beach State posted a 290, Cal State Fullerton 293 and CSUN 297 to break the deadlock.
Long Beach State (571) is three shots ahead of Cal State Fullerton (574) with CSUN (578) another four strokes back and Cal Poly nine shots off the pace with its 580 total.
Mark Stephens of UC Davis rallied from his 77 on Sunday by going 10 under par on his first 16 holes Tuesday, moving into a tie for the lead with first-round co-leader Felix Schrott (66-73) of CSUN. Schrott finished his round at five-under-par 139.
Ian Gilligan and Isaac Rodea, both of Long Beach State, share third place with 140 totals after rounds of 69 and 71.
Cal Poly's Ben Quick followed his first-round 70 with a 73 and shares sixth place with Russel Howlett (70-73) of Cal State Fullerton, both with one-under-par 143 totals.
Mustangs Jackson Parrish (74-71) and Baron Szeto (72-73) are tied for 11th place with 145 totals while Joey Zambri carded a 73 and is tied with four other golfers for 15th place with 147 totals. Included in Parrish's round was an eagle on the 389-yard par-4 eighth hole.
Austin Liu rounded out Cal Poly's scoring with a 73, improving his first-round score by six strikes and climbing 16 spots on the leaderboard into 29th place with a 152 total.
Parrish tops the field in par-3 scoring at two under par while Szeto is third in par-5 scoring at six under par. Quick is sixth in par-4 scoring at one over par.
Szeto also is sixth with eight birdies over 36 holes while Zambri is fourth with his 25 pars.
