Cal Poly Completes Sweep of UC Riverside Series with 3-1 Victory

Joe Yorke drove in two runs and Cal Poly scored twice in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 3-1 victory over UC Riverside on Saturday, completing a sweep of the Big West Conference baseball series before 1,923 inside Baggett Stadium.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, who earned 13-2 and 9-8 wins opening the series, improved to 10-18 overall and 6-6 in Big West games. UC Riverside fell to 6-21 and 0-9.
Paso Robles High School graduate Jakob Wright threw eight pitches, all strikes, and retired the side in order in the top of the first inning, two via strikeout, in his collegiate debut on the mound.
Wright missed all of the 2022 season at Cal Poly and the first seven weeks of the current campaign due to injuries to his left arm which required at least two surgeries. As a result, the southpaw was limited to one inning of work Saturday.
"You really feel for him and I'm very happy that he was able to get back on the mound and pitch in a real game," said Lee. "He hasn't been the same since his sophomore year in high school. It's been a long process."
Wright pitched just six innings as a senior at Paso Robles and eight during his COVID-shortened 2020 season as a junior. He made 17 appearances on the mound as a freshman and sophomore, posting a 3-3 win-loss record and 3.50 ERA.
"We're hoping that we have found a real issue with his arm," Lee said. "He's electric. He would have been our Friday night starter and that pushes everyone else back and puts somebody else into the bullpen.
"He has the ability to beat anybody in the country when he's on," Lee added. "When healthy, he changes the whole dynamics of the team. It's like what would have happened if you took Drew Thorpe out of the Friday role last year. It changes everything about your team.
"We'll gradually build him up and hopefully he will finish the year strong. He has a bright future."

UC Riverside tallied its run in the sixth when Jayden Lopez grounded into a double play.
Kaden Sheedy relieved Wright in the second inning and allowed one run and four hits over five innings for the victory. Sheedy (1-1) struck out three and did not allow a walk. Ryan Baum earned his first save with three scoreless hitless frames and a pair of strikeouts.
Wright, Sheedy and Baum combined to limit the Highlanders to four singles.
The loss went to Eric Marrujo (2-4) as he allowed all three Mustang runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Jake Steels, Ryan Stafford and Aaron Casillas each singled twice to spark Cal Poly's eight-hit offensive attack. Casillas extended his hitting streak to nine games with singles in the third and eighth innings.
Cal Poly hit .327 in the series, led by Stafford (6-for-10, two doubles, three RBIs), Yorke (6-for-12, two doubles, eight RBIs) and Ryan Fenn (5-for-11, one double, one RBI). Casillas also had five hits.
Cal Poly has won seven of its last 12 contests after a 3-13 start.
"We started playing competitive baseball the last two or three weeks," said Lee. "For us to be successful, we really have to put together nine solid innings. We can't have a breakdown in any facet of the game throughout those nine innings.
"We're just not good enough to overcome those types of situations," Lee added, "but we're much better offensively and getting better defensively. We're not there yet, and I'm not sure we'll get there by the end of the year. Pitching-wise, we're on or off. We're not real consistent. We string together some solid innings, then we give up a big inning.
"Overall, we're even on the weekends and, in the games we've lost, we've been very competitive. We had a chance to pick up three more wins in which we didn't care of the game and it cost us."
Cal Poly wraps up a five-game home stand Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Santa Clara before heading back out on the road for its next two Big West series -- at CSU Bakersfield next Friday through Sunday and at CSUN on April 21-23.
