SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly golfer Parker Mapes captured medalist honors in a US Open Local Qualifier on Thursday at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc.
A sophomore from Pleasanton and a graduate of Amador Valley High School, Mapes carded a three-under-par 69 on the 6,950-yard par-72 course with four birdies and a bogey on the final hole.
Mapes finished one stroke ahead of four others -- Brian Locke of Los Angeles, Joachim Altonen of Finland, Larry Correa of Lompoc and Steve Holmes of Simi Valley -- who shared second place with 70s.
Mustang teammates Joey Zambri and Austin Liu both carded 73s while Jackson Parrish recorded a 77 and Ben Quick 81. There were 80 golfers in the field with five advancing to one of 13 Final Qualifiers to be held May 16 through June 5, including the Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles.
Local qualifying is being held April 17 through May 22 with 9,693 golfers competing for 530 spots on 109 courses.
The 123rd US Open will be conducted June 15-18 at The Los Angeles Country Club's North Course. The U.S. Open will be held at the club for the first time.
