UC Irvine Turns 5-0 Cal Poly Lead into 9-7 Win, Ties Big West Series
3/25/2023 7:47:00 PM | Baseball
Before a crowd of 1,987, Cal Poly scored five times in the second inning, the key blow Steels' first home run as a Mustang, for a 5-0 lead.
UC Irvine, however, scored a run inn the third, tied the game with four in the fifth thanks in part to Anthony Martinez's fifth home run of the year, took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and pulled away with three in the seventh on another sacrifice fly and two bases-loaded walks.
The Mustangs cut the Anteaters' 9-5 lead in half in the bottom of the seventh on Ryan Stafford's sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Collin Villegas before Jacob King retired four of the five batters he faced for his fourth save.
The series is even at a game apiece as Cal Poly fell to 5-14 overall and UC Irvine improved to 13-6. Both teams are 2-3 in conference play entering Sunday's series finale at 1 o'clock.
With Ozzie Smith on hand for the rededication ceremony of his bronze statue behind Hoffman Press Box, Cal Poly and UC Irvine combined for 16 runs on 16 hits.
Villegas singled twice to lead Cal Poly's offensive attack. Martinez and Caden Kendle each had two his for UC Irvine.
In a battle of southpaws, Nick Pinto (3-0) earned the victory despite allowing five earned runs in five innings. He was the UC Irvine pitcher of record when the Anteaters snapped a 5-5 tie with the go-ahead run in the sixth.
Travis Weston (2-3) absorbed the loss, surrendering six runs and seven hits over five-plus innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Freddy Rodriguez tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames for the Mustangs.
Junior right-hander Kaden Sheedy (0-1, 4.32 ERA) will start Sunday's game for Cal Poly, facing UC Irvine graduate right-hander Andre Antone (2-0, 4.05 ERA) as the Mustangs wrap up a 14-game home stand.
