SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Seven student-athletes on the Cal Poly swimming and diving team recently received College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.
Four members of the Mustang women's swimming and diving team were recognized for their performance and dedication in the classroom and in the pool — Amy Harter (materials engineering), Erin Kim (Kinesiology), Kelly McDermott (aerospace engineering) and Jackie Samaniego (environmental management and protection). The Cal Poly men had three honorees: Jimmy Butler (business administration), Sean Keegan (business administration) and Brian Wong (mechanical engineering).
The CSC Academic All-District men's and women's swimming and diving teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes and to qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 GPA, have a minimum of one year completed at their current institution and be a key contributor athletically.
Harter (pictured above), Kim, Samaniego and Wong recently wrapped up their senior seasons with the Mustangs, while Butler, Keegan and McDermott are all juniors who will be back next fall.
These student-athletes are no stranger to academic praise as Harter, Kim, Samaniego and Wong have all garnered Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming & Diving All-Academic praise multiple times, while and Butler and Keegan each earned MPSF All-Academic selections last season.
McDermott and Wong are fresh off All-MPSF second team performances in the pool. Wong captured seventh in the men's 200-yard butterfly at the 2023 conference meet, securing All-MPSF second team honors for the fifth time in his career. McDermott took home eighth in the women's 400 individual medley and swam the fourth-fastest 200-yard backstroke time in school history (2:01.34) at the MPSF meet. Wong is also second all-time in Cal Poly history in the 200 fly and No. 4 in the 100 fly.
Samaniego shattered the school record in the women's 1-meter dive this season and placed ninth in the event at the MPSF Championships. Kim owns the fifth-fastest women's 100 fly time in Mustang history and Keegan is No. 4 all-time in the men's 200 IM.
