SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Despite nearly four inches of rain on Tuesday, Cal Poly's baseball game against USC on Wednesday will be played as scheduled inside Baggett Stadium.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
USC, which claimed 12 national titles from 1948-98, will start senior right-hander Blake Sodersten (1-1, 6.14 ERA) on the mound against Cal Poly freshman right-hander Charlie Royle (0-0, 78.10 ERA). Sodersten pitched at CSUN the last four years before transferring to USC.
USC is 7-7 on the year after winning two of three games against then-No. 2 Stanford last weekend. Cal Poly (3-10) has lost nine of its last 10 games after winning its season-opening series against Missouri State.
The Trojans are playing their first season under new head coach Andy Stankiewicz, who was head coach at Grand Canyon for 11 years, compiling a 341-239-2 record.
USC holds a 26-10 record all-time against Cal Poly, but the Mustangs won two of three games in their last meeting against the Trojans in a series at Dedeaux Field in 2021.
USC is hitting .285 as a team, led by catcher Connor Clift with a .435 average in seven games. Center fielder Austin Overn is next at .344 and leads the nation with seven triples while right fielder Cole Gabrielson is hitting .306 with six home runs and 18 RBIs and first baseman Ethan Hedges .303.
Cal Poly's top hitters to date are center fielder Jake Steels (.360), first baseman Joe Yorke (.294) and catcher Ryan Stafford and shortstop Aaron Casillas, each with .288 averages.
Following the game, USC will continue to travel north on Highway 101 for its weekend Pac-12 series at Cal. The Mustangs remain home this weekend and open Big West Conference play against Hawai'i on Friday through Sunday.
Cal Poly has added a game to its 2023 schedule as a result of the cancellation of the UNLV series. The Mustangs will host Fresno State on Tuesday, May 16, at 5 p.m., one week after hosting the same Bulldogs at 6 o'clock.
