SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly joined what was then the Pac-10 Conference as an affiliate member for wrestling starting with the 1986-87 season.
The Mustangs have finished second twice and third two times as well. They have never claimed a Pac-10 or Pac-12 championship in 37 tries.
Buoyed by its 5-0 mark in Pac-12 dual meets this season, Cal Poly's wrestlers believe this might be their year.
"We are looking forward to the event, as it will be a great opportunity for our guys to showcase all of their hard work," said seventh-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas.
Standing in the way are Arizona State, which has claimed the last three Pac-12 championships and five of the previous six, along with Oregon State, which won five straight Pac-12 titles from 2012-16.
Cal Poly edged Arizona State 19-18 on Trevor Tinker's major decision in the final bout and was a 19-15 winner over Oregon State with wins by Bernie Truax and Tinker to overcome a 15-12 deficit.
Arizona State defeated Oregon State 23-16 to finish 4-1 in Pac-12 duals. The Beavers posted a 3-2 conference mark, followed by Stanford (2-3), Little Rock (1-4) and CSU Bakersfield (0-5).
The 2023 Pac-12 Championships will be held Sunday in Stanford's Maples Pavilion.
Session 1 will begin at 10 a.m. and will include the preliminary rounds. Session 2 will begin at 4:45 p.m. with the fifth-place matches, followed by the championship matches at 6 p.m. Both sessions will be video streamed on Stanford's live stream (see links at top of page).
The finals also will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks. Additional coverage of the event will be provided across Pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app.
"We are wrestling well and are looking forward to seeing our guys put forth their best effort," said Sioredas. "Regardless of the outcome, we are extremely proud of this group and how they have continued to grow at a rapid pace throughout the season, both technically and from a mindset standpoint.
"Should be a lot of fun this Sunday," Sioredas added.
