Mustangs Fall Down the Stretch to UC Irvine Thursday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore Sydney Bourland and senior Maddie Willett combined for 25 points, but Cal Poly, who got within one in the fourth quarter, fell at home to second place UC Irvine Thursday, 68-55.
Bourland finished with a team-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Willett scored 12 points and also dished out three assists. Junior forward Natalia Ackerman had career-highs of 13 rebounds and four blocks with six points. Graduate guard Oumou Toure contributed eight points, five rebounds and five assists while sophomore guard Jazzy Anousinh added seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.
The Anteaters (18-5, 10-2 BW), who never trailed and forced the Mustangs (6-15, 3-10 BW) into 19 turnovers, had three players in double figures led by guard Hunter Hernandez's 25 points.
Cal Poly, who was 4-19 from three on the night, struggled to get going offensively early. UC Irvine got out to a 10-0 lead. However, the Mustangs finished the quarter on a 12-5 run to be within three heading into the second.
The Mustangs got within one of the Anteaters in the second quarter. However, Cal Poly went on a scoring drought of nearly three minutes during which time the Anteaters extended their lead to seven.
After trailing by six at halftime, the Mustangs opened the second half on a 7-2 run to get back within one with just under six minutes left in the third. Cal Poly continued to keep it close into the fourth quarter. However, with the Mustangs trailing by two with four minutes left, the Anteaters went on a 10-4 run over the next two minutes to extend their lead to eight.
Cal Poly will now prepare to welcome CSUN to Mott Athletics Center Saturday at 2 p.m. The Mustangs will be looking for revenge as the Matadors won the first meeting this season back in December in Northridge.
