Clements Named to Big West Preseason Team; Mustangs Sixth in Poll

SAN LUIS OBISPO – With sophomore outfielder Jessica Clements earning a position on the preseason coaches' team, the Cal Poly softball program was selected for a sixth-place finish in the 2023 Big West Preseason Poll Friday afternoon.
Returning five positional starters and 11 letterwinners from last year's squad, Cal Poly collected 40 total points in the poll and one first-place vote to finish just one point behind CSUN.
Defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton was selected to retain its title with 80 points and eight of 10 first-place votes. Last year's runner-up, Long Beach State, finished second with 68 points and the remaining first-place vote.
Hawai'i (59 points) and UC San Diego (56) finished third and fourth in the poll, respectively. Following Cal Poly in sixth was UC Riverside (36 points), UC Davis (35), UC Santa Barbara (20) and CSU Bakersfield (15).
Named to NFCA All-West Region third team and as the Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year last season, Clements finished 2022 with a .396 (63-for-159) batting average – the sixth highest single season mark in program history. Named one of 25 finalists for the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year honor, Clements also finished second among Big West players with 63 hits and fourth with 36 runs.
Starting the year at home for the first time in 16 seasons, Cal Poly begins 2023 with the Feb. 10-12 Central Coast Classic. Cal Poly opens the tournament at Bob Janssen Field on Friday, Feb. 10 versus North Dakota (4:30 p.m.).
