SAN JOSE, Calif. -- After scoring seven times in the seventh inning to overcome a 9-3 deficit, Cal Poly snapped a 10-10 tie against San Jose State on Ryan Stafford's RBI single in the eighth inning.
After San Jose State was retired in the bottom of the eighth, the non-conference baseball game was suspended due to failing light and will be resumed when the two teams meet again April 18 in San Luis Obispo.
Excite Ballpark usually has lights for Spartans and San Jose Giants games, but they were removed in the last two weeks in favor of new lights that won't be installed until late March.
San Jose State held 1-0, 5-1 and 9-3 leads but couldn't hold on. The game was tied twice at 1-1 and 10-10. Villegas scored on a wild pitch to give Cal Poly its first lead of the game at 10-9 in the seventh and Stafford's RBI single in the eighth resulted in an 11-10 Mustang advantage.
Both teams collected 13 hits in the 3 hours and 45 minutes that were required to complete eight innings.
Stafford, Villegas, Joe Yorke and Kemet Brown all had two hits for Cal Poly. San Jose State was paced by Robert Hamchuk and Theo Hardy, each with three hits. Charles McAdoo added two hits, including a solo home run in the first inning.
Tanner Sagouspe, who struck out the side in the seventh in relief and also retired the Spartans in the eighth, is Cal Poly's pitcher of record. Cade Van Allen holds that honor for San Jose State.
Cal Poly sent 12 batters to the plate in the seventh, the big hits provided by Joe Yorke with a two-run double, Sagouspe with an RBI double and Villegas with a run-scoring single.
Cal Poly returns to the Bay Area this weekend for three games at Berkeley, facing Cal on Friday at 3 p.m., Connecticut on Friday at 7 p.m. and Cal again on Saturday at 6 p.m.
