ATHERTON, Calif. — Just a day after Cal Poly wrestling opened its 75th year as a program, seven Mustang wrestlers placed and six made their collegiate debuts at the Menlo Open on Saturday inside Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
The early season tournament provided the Mustangs with an opportunity to give underclassmen on the team some much needed experience on the mat, and those that competed took full advantage. Six of the eight freshmen on this year's squad took part in the event hosted by Menlo College, along with four returners — redshirt sophomore Cole Jackson, and redshirt freshmen Koda Holeman, Luke Villaluz and Luke Meyer.
Holeman led the way, securing two victories by fall and one by technical fall before coming up short to Oregon State's Maximo Renteria in the first-place match at 125 pounds to take home second.
Meyer (heavyweight), and freshmen Devin Alexander (157) and Blake Hinrichsen (174) all earned second-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Alexander won one bout by technical fall and one by pin, while Hinrichsen grabbed a technical fall and major decision. Meyer won all three of his matches by decision.
Jackson (heavyweight), and freshmen Gavin Fernandez (157) and Tyler Hodges (197) all placed third. Jackson secured a victory by fall and technical fall and Fernandez earned a major decision and technical fall. Hodges pinned an opponent 2:33 into one of his bouts.
As a team, the Mustangs placed fourth out of 11 schools.
