COMPLETE GAME PREVIEW
CAL POLY VS. LA VERNE: ESPN + | LIVE STATS | AUDIO
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Returning seven letterwinners from last season and welcoming nine newcomers to the lineup, the Cal Poly men's basketball team opens its 30th Division I season and 80th year as four-year program when hosting Division III La Verne on Monday, Nov. 6. Tip time from Mott Athletics Center on ESPN+ is 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, which looks to prevail in a season opener for the fourth successive season under fifth-year head coach John Smith. Playing on the earliest opening date in program history, Monday's matchup versus La Verne marks the first of 14 regular season home games for Cal Poly. La Verne, which hosted the Mustangs for a two-game series to close Cal Poly's first season as a four-year program (1941-42), plays the first of two Division I opponents on its schedule Monday (the Leopards visit fellow Big West opponent UC San Diego on Nov. 13). Members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Association, La Verne finished 7-17 last season.
CAL POLY VERSUS LA VERNE, THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AND NON-DIVISION I OPPOSITION: Facing La Verne for the first time at the Division I level and since handing the Leopards an 86-82 loss inside Mott Athletics Center on Dec. 18, 1992, Cal Poly has prevailed in four of the previous five all-time matchups. The two programs first met during the 1941-42 season, splitting a two-game series in La Verne to close the year. Cal Poly last faced a SCIAC opponent on Nov. 29, 2006, hosting Occidental and prevailing, 81-62. Since transitioning to the Division I level prior to the 1994-95 season, Cal Poly is 47-1 against non-Division I programs.
LOOKING AHEAD (NOV. 9 / 11): Cal Poly's 2023-24 schedule features three first-time opponents, two of which come with visits to Denver (Thursday, Nov. 9) and Wyoming (Saturday, Nov. 11). Tip time is 6 p.m. PT (7 p.m. MT) both evenings for Cal Poly, which also plays the first two of four matchups outside of the Pacific Time Zone later this week.
