SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly wrestling team opens its 2023-24 campaign at home this Friday when the Mustangs welcome Duke and No. 14 Rutgers to Mott Athletics Center.
The defending Pac-12 dual meet champions will square off with the Blue Devils first at 6 p.m., and then cap the night at 7:30 p.m. against the nationally ranked Scarlet Knights. At 4 p.m., Duke and Rutgers will face each other to kick-off the action on the mat.
The tripleheader is part of a jam-packed weekend of events as the Mustangs celebrate their 75th year as a program. The special 75th Anniversary Celebration starts at 9 a.m. Friday with the program's 20th annual golf tournament held at the Avila Beach Golf Resort.
Prior to battling Rutgers on Friday, Cal Poly will hold a parade of All-Americans to honor the program's 118 Division I and Division II All-Americans and welcome alumni to the floor for a group photo. Former Mustang wrestler Joseph Pangelinan will then sing the national anthem before Cal Poly takes the mat against the Scarlet Knights.
The celebration continues Saturday as the Mustangs will host an open practice in the Rec Center wrestling room at 9 a.m. before providing a tour of the program's brand new locker room at noon. The official Cal Poly wrestling 75th Anniversary Celebration gets underway at 2:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and silent auction and a program to follow at 3:30 p.m. Former Cal Poly wrestler Victor Glover, the first Black astronaut to complete a long-term stay on the International Space Station, is scheduled to give the keynote speech during the program. Glover was recently named the pilot for the NASA crew that will travel around the moon on Artemis II.
On the mat, the Mustangs, who received eight votes in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll, are eager to take on a pair of formidable foes Friday night.
Cal Poly's dual with Duke will mark just the second meeting all-time between the two schools. The Blue Devils won the first meeting 28-18 in San Luis Obispo on Jan. 17, 2016.
The Mustangs have squared off with the Scarlet Knights twice before with the all-time series even at 1-1. Rutgers, who finished last season ranked No. 22 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll with seven NCAA qualifiers, is one of only seven schools in the country with a ranked wrestler in all 10 weight classes, highlighted by No. 6 Dean Peterson (125), No. 6 Yaraslau Slavikouski (HWT) and No. 10 Brian Soldano (184). The Scarlet Knights have 12 NCAA qualifiers on their roster and two All-Americans, No. 12 John Poznanski (197) and No. 28 Jackson Turley (174).
Cal Poly is looking forward to the challenge and will counter with four ranked wrestlers of their own — No. 7 Chance Lamer (149), No. 19 Adam Kemp (174), No. 25 Trevor Tinker (HWT) and No. 26 Legend Lamer. Last year as a redshirt freshman at Michigan, Chance made it to the Round of 12 at the NCAA Championships and he enters his career as a Mustang with a 32-11 overall collegiate record. His older brother, Legend, Kemp and Tinker are all former NCAA qualifiers as well, with Tinker earning his first trip last season by way of an at-large bid.
NCAA.com pinpointed Friday's dual between Cal Poly and Rutgers as one of five to pay attention to during the opening weekend of the collegiate wrestling season.
Both duals for the Mustangs on Friday will be streamed live on the Cal Poly wrestling X page.
