11/19/2023 7:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RIVERSIDE – Senior guard Kobe Sanders finished with 17 points – his sixth straight double-digit scoring game to open the season – and sophomore forward Aaron Price., Jr. added a career high 15, but the Cal Poly men's basketball team closed the three-day Lancer Joust Sunday evening with a 67-58 loss at host California Baptist.
Graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola added 10 points and Sanders and Price, Jr. each grabbed a team leading seven rebounds for Cal Poly (2-4), which kept California Baptist (4-1) to a 27.6 (8-for-29) percent field goal mark in the first half and took a 26-26 tie into the break.
California Baptist, however, opened the second half with a 10-2 run and never trailed during the second half en route to victory.
The Mustangs committed just six turnovers Sunday.
Following a 10-day break, Cal Poly returns home to host San Jose State on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Tip time from Mott Athletics Center on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Despite holding California Baptist to a 0-for-6 shooting start Sunday, Cal Poly found itself in a 7-4 deficit after six minutes. Cal Poly, however, scored on its next four possessions, a run capped by back-to-back jumpers from Price, Jr. as the Mustangs surged to a 13-9 lead midway through the half.
During a first half where neither side led by more than four points though, the two sides split the 26-26 scoreline heading into the locker room.
Trailing California Baptist 36-28 early in the second half, Cal Poly kept the Lancers to just one field goal during an ensuing three-minute span to cut the deficit to 41-38 with 13 minutes to play. Graduate guard Jarred Hyder – who finished with nine points – followed with a free throw before Sanders knocked down a three-pointer, but Cal Poly's 43-42 disadvantage with 11-and-a-half minutes remaining was as close as the Mustangs drew the remainder of the game.
The Lancers countered with a 16-5 run to take the game's first double-digit lead and keep the Mustangs at distance.
