SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's soccer junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week as an honorable mention on Tuesday for her stellar performance between the pipes this past week.
Samuel was one of 24 players nationally to receive Top Drawer Soccer (TDS) Team of the Week honors during the week of Oct. 2-8.
Across matches at Long Beach State and UC Irvine, Samuel recorded 11 saves and allowed just one goal while facing 28 shots, helping the Mustangs go unbeaten (1-0-1) this past week.
In a scoreless draw at LBSU this past Thursday, Samuel made seven saves to secure her 15th career clean sheet — tied for the sixth most in program history. On Sunday in a 2-1 victory over the Anteaters, the San Diego native earned four saves to help Cal Poly capture its victory at UC Irvine in nine years and move into a tie for second place in the Big West standings.
This season, Samuel has started every match in net for the Mustangs, posting two shutouts, a 1.38 goals against average, 39 saves and a 5-5-3 record.
Samuel was crowned Big West Goalkeeper of the Year last season after recording nine clean sheets — tied for the third most in a season in program history — and securing a program-record seven shutouts in Big West play.
Currently, Samuel ranks 10th all-time in Cal Poly history in career saves with 129.
