SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by strong defense, Cal Poly earned its first conference win under head coach Shanele Stires, beating CSU Bakersfield Thursday 50-37 inside Mott Athletics Center.Taylor Wu (pictured) led all players with 11 points on 4-8 shooting, including three threes. Junior forward Natalia Ackerman nearly posted a double-double, finishing with 10 points and a season-high nine rebounds, as well as a career-high three blocks and two steals. Graduate guard Nikola Kovacikova added nine points, five rebounds and four assists for the Mustangs (4-7, 1-2 BW), who eclipsed their win total from all of last season with Thursday's victory.
Wu, Ackerman, and Kovacikova all came off the bench to account for Cal Poly's 30 bench points compared to just three bench points for the Roadrunners (4-7, 1-2 BW). Defensively, the Mustangs limited CSU Bakersfield to 30-percent shooting overall and 15-percent shooting from three. The Mustangs also out-rebounded the Roadrunners 43 to 25, including 15 offensive rebounds.
CSU Bakersfield scored the first five points of the game 1:20 into the first quarter. They scored two points the remainder of the quarter as Cal Poly scored 14 points to go up by seven. In the second quarter, the Roadrunners cut the Mustang lead to as little as six with 1:29 left before Wu made a three with just under a minute left to put Cal Poly ahead by nine at halftime.
The Mustangs were held to five points in the third quarter as CSU Bakersfield outscored Cal Poly by six to make it a three point game heading into the fourth quarter. Cal Poly junior guard Junie Dickson made a three to open the fourth before the Roadrunners scored six straight points to tie the game 32-32 with 7:30 left. Cal Poly then went on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes to pull away from the Roadrunners.
