SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman Courtney Cross and junior Kieran McNulty won the titles of 'King and Queen of the Pool' for Cal Poly during Friday's annual pentathlon with Cal at the Anderson Aquatic Center. The meet was the 2022-23 season opener for the Mustangs.
Cross earned the title of 'Queen of the Pool' in her first attempt. Her older sister, junior Katie Cross, grabbed 'Queen' honors last year.
This is the first time McNulty has been crowned 'King of the Pool' for the Mustangs. Last season, McNulty claimed his second straight MPSF title in the 1650-yard freestyle, and he currently holds school records in the 500 and 1000 free.
During Friday's pentathlon, each swimmer competed in five 100-yard races, including butterfly, breaststroke, individual medley, backstroke and freestyle. The men's and women's swimmer from each school with the best combined time was crowned 'King and Queen of the Pool.'
Cal is a perennial powerhouse in the pool, and Cal Poly head coach Phil Yoshida was encouraged by what he saw from his team against the Golden Bears.
"So many things became apparent and the exciting potential of this young group is real," he said. "Every day we will get better and as we start October, no day will be wasted. Watch out, the Mustangs are on the drive!"
Cross completed the pentathlon in 5:04.27, giving her an 18th-place finish overall. Freshman Melia Costa came in 20th overall (5:09.72), senior Samantha Rankin 22nd (5:13.57), freshman Jen Reiter 23rd (5:14.17) and senior Erin Kim 24th (5:15.35).
McNulty finished the five events in 4:26.08, good for a 23rd overall finish on the men's side. Freshman Nick Elliott was right on McNulty's heels for the title of 'King of the Pool', finishing sixth tenths of a second behind him in 24th (4:26.68). Freshman Jonathan Butler placed 28th (4:29.75) and junior Ryan Trichler took 30th (4:30.73).
"For those that have followed the team recently, having Kieran lead the way is no surprise," Yoshida said, "but to have four newcomers right behind him, and three of the top five women be first-years as well, just bodes well for the base we are building."
Isabelle Stadden won 'Queen of the Pool' for Cal, finishing the pentathlon in 4:39.05 to claim first overall on the women's side. Destin Lasco earned the title of 'King of the Pool' for the Golden Bears with a time of 4:04.23.
Cal Poly travels to rival UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 for its first dual of the season.
