
Cal Poly Men's Cross Country Grabs First at Pacific Collegiate Invite, Women Take Second

LODI, Calif. — Cal Poly men's cross country rolled to the team title at the Pacific Collegiate Invitational on Friday evening, while the Mustang women took home a second-place finish to put a bow on an impressive day for the program.
In a dominant performance by the Mustangs, six runners finished inside the top-nine in the men's 8K race at the Micke Grove Golf Course, allowing Cal Poly to finish with 21 team points, 34 points in front of second-place Fresno Pacific.
Redshirt junior John Bennett (pictured above) grabbed the individual title and his highest career finish, completing the course in 24:21.9. Godebo Chapman (24:45.7) placed third, Cayden Hein (24:50.5) fourth, Jake Richardson (25:11.5) sixth, Emmanuel Guzman (25:21.3) eighth, Spencer Pickren (25:22.8) ninth and Anthony Benitez (25:38.3) 19th to round out the top seven runners for the men.
In the battle for the team title on the women's side, Cal Poly and Saint Mary's both finished with 45 points, but the Gaels won the tiebreaker to capture first.
Redshirt freshman Isabel Sanchez led the Cal Poly women, placing third with a 6K time of 22:06.8 to earn a career-best finish. Freshman Kaylee Elliott secured fifth (22:08.9) in her collegiate debut. Redshirt sophomore Kaia Hoak (22:18.0) took eighth, freshman Lara Carrion (22:33.1) 13th and freshman Emma McCain (22:38.4) 16th.
Cal Poly's top runners competed in the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Friday morning. The women earned a runner-up finish in the Gold race, while the men captured seventh in a Blue race filled with ranked teams. Read the full recap from that meet here.
