Mustangs Fall to Utah State in Season Opener, 3-1

LOGAN, Utah — Playing in her first match since the end of the 2019 season, senior right side hitter Maia Dvoracek picked up right where she left off, finishing with a team-high 15 kills and a career-high 17 digs. However, Cal Poly dropped its season-opening match at Utah State Friday, 3-1 (20-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-27).
Dvoracek's double-double, the eighth of her career, was one of several strong individual performances. Redshirt sophomore Tommi Stockham recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Redshirt freshman setter Emme Bullis, playing in her first career match, also had a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs to go along with six blocks.
Senior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added nine kills, hitting .474, and had a match-high seven blocks. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kate Slack finished with eight kills and four blocks while redshirt sophomore outside hitter Amy Hiatt came off the bench to finish with eight kills and three blocks.
As a team, the Mustangs (0-1) tallied 14 blocks to the Aggies' (1-0), the reigning Mountain West champions, 10. Cal Poly also finished with a higher hitting percentage than Utah State for the match and in three of the four sets.
In the first set, both teams traded points early. With the Mustangs ahead 9-8, a 5-0 run by the Aggies gave them a four-point lead. Cal Poly later cut the deficit to one at 16-15 before Utah State scored four straight points to go up 19-15. The Mustangs got it back to within two at 22-20 before the Aggies scored the next three points to win the set 25-20.
Similar to the first set, the second set started with both teams going back and forth. Tied 11-11, Utah State scored three straight points before the Mustangs responded with four consecutive points of their own to regain the lead, 15-14. Tied at 21 apiece later in the set, three straight points by Cal Poly gave them set point at 24-21. Utah State then held off three consecutive set points while scoring the next four points to take a 25-24 lead. Tied at 25, Utah State was able to get the next two points to come back and win the set 27-25.
Cal Poly was able to shake off how the second set ended and bounced back in the third. Trailing 6-4, the Mustangs rattled off eight points in a row to go ahead by six. They later took their largest lead of the set of nine, 23-14. Utah State then scored six straight points to trim the Cal Poly lead to 23-20. However, following a Mustang timeout, Cal Poly scored the next two points to take the set 25-20.
In the fourth set, Utah State took a 12-7 lead before the Mustangs scored four straight points to cut it to one. Ahead 13-12, Utah State extend its lead to 16-12 after scoring three consecutive points before Cal Poly responded with a 5-1 run to tie it 17-17. Later tied at 21 apiece, the Aggies scored the next three points to take a 24-21 lead. The Mustangs, battling tough, held off each of those match points and tied it 24-24. After the teams traded points to tie it 25-25, an attack error by the Mustangs followed by an Aggie kill finished off the match for Utah State.
Cal Poly will have a chance to bounce back Saturday right back in Logan when facing No. 12 UCLA at 9 a.m. PT. The match will be live streamed on video and audio with links for those on the schedule page.
