SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore Emma Brown was one of 35 players in Division I women's soccer to be named a "Defender to Watch" by the United Soccer Coaches ahead of the 2022 season.
Brown, a 2021 United Soccer Coaches All-West Region second team selection, appeared in 20 of 21 matches for the Mustangs this past season, starting in 17 of them. She led Cal Poly in minutes played last fall with 1,599, helping the team secure six shutouts and earn a share of its first Big West Conference regular season title since 2013.
Brown, a native of Clovis, Calif., was one of two defenders from the Big West Conference named to the watch list, joining UC Irvine senior Madison Chavez.
Brown, a member of the 2021 Big West All-Freshman Team, was ranked No. 56 on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Women's Freshman Top 100 list at the end of last season.
The watch list is made up of United Soccer Coaches All-Americans and first or second team All-Region players from 2021, who are returning in 2022. A watch list for goalkeepers was released last week, and one for midfielders and forwards will be announced Friday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 16 respectively.
