The class, which was inducted in February inside the Multi-Activity Center on campus and includes juniors and seniors who meet the criteria, is Cal Poly's first class to be added to the National College Athlete Honor Society (Chi Alpha Sigma).
To be inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student-athlete must attend a four-year accredited college or university that is a member of the NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, or USCAA. The honoree also must achieve at least junior academic standing by the fifth semester or seventh quarter, as determined by the certifying institution, and must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).
Zach Reed, an Athletic Academic Advisor in the Mustang Success Center, serves as advisor for Cal Poly's chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, in collaboration with Keri Mendoza, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance / Senior Woman Administrator, and Ashleigh Horstmann, Assistant Athletic Director for Administration / Chief of Athletic Staff.
"Students really appreciate the support from leadership on this," said Reed. "In working closely with Don Oberhelman (Athletics) and Shannon Stephens (Mustang Success Center) to gain traction in creating a chapter here, it became apparent that there is amazing academic achievement from every single Mustang sports team.
"This is a recognition that the students wanted and have earned," Reed added. "Chi Alpha Sigma will also provide leadership opportunities to our student-athletes because of its student-led organizational structure and sanctioning through ASI. This is a great new platform for students as they eventually transition to life after sport."
"Having a chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma on the Cal Poly campus is truly an honor for me and my fellow student athletes," said Leadership Cabinet member Jackie Samaniego, a member of Cal Poly's swimming and diving team. "To be recognized and celebrated for our hard work, both for our sport and in the classroom, is extremely rewarding.
"I take pride in being a part of this fraternity," Samaniego added. "My fellow teammates and I hope to gain valuable skills that will guide us with our life after college athletics and give us confidence with our pursuit of a career. It also helps motivate us to keep striving for more and to be the best representation and example of Cal Poly athletics."
Added John Bennett of Cal Poly's cross country and track and field programs and a 2021 Big West Conference Scholar-Athlete, "To me, having the chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma on the Cal Poly campus is a chance for all Cal Poly athletes to be recognized for their athletic and academic excellence. I hope that Chi Alpha Sigma helps me meet and network more with my peers, and others might see Chi Alpha Sigma as an opportunity to gain leadership experience."
