Szeto Finishes Tied for Fourth in Big West Championship

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Cal Poly freshman Baron Szeto capped a solid first season with the Mustang men's golf program as he finished tied for fourth place in the 2022 Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday at the La Quinta Country Club.
Szeto followed his opening-round 71 and second-round 73 with another 71 on the 7,056-yard par-72 course for a one-under-par 215 total, sharing fourth place with Mark Stephens of UC Davis, Felix Schrott of CSUN and Isaac Rodea of Long Beach State.
Szeto carded three birdies and a pair of bogeys in his final round, climbing five spots on the final leaderboard. For the three-day 54-hole tournament, the Campolindo High School graduate recorded 13 birdies, eight bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys.
Nicholas Mok began the day in fifth place but posted a final-round 79 to finish with a five-over-par 221 total and 18th place. Austin Liu added a 72, including an eagle on the 527-yard par-5 sixth hole, for a 224 total and 27th place while Will Draper carded a 77 for a 35th-place finish with his 229 aggregate.
Cal Poly finished seventh in the nine-team tournament with a 24-over-par 888 total after posting a four-person 299 aggregate Tuesday.
UC Davis was a wire-to-wire winner with an 11-under-par 853 total, six shots ahead of runner-up and defending conference champion Long Beach State. CSUN was third at 874, one stroke ahead of Cal State Fullerton.
Thomas Hutchison (67-67-68) of UC Davis also led from start to finish, carding a final-round 68 for a 13-under-par 203 total and a four-stroke win over Ian Gilligan (70-68-69) of Long Beach State. Third place was earned by Darien Zhao (70-71-73) of UC Irvine at 214.
Szeto played the par-5 holes at nine under par to lead the field while Liu was tied for seventh at five under par. Szeto's 13 birdies were one shy of the lead.
UC Davis will represent the Big West Conference in one of six NCAA regionals slated for May 16-18. The NCAA Division I National Championships will be held May 27 through June 1 on the Raptor Course at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
